Derek Nelson is a director of photography based in Brooklyn, NY.

Nice to meet you. I began working in the photo industry at a time when photography was transitioning from film to primarily digital. I was working on many fashion editorial projects, as well as fashion ad campaigns, portraiture, beauty, still life, and a little of everything else. I enjoyed being part of the edit process, even as a wallflower; to see and learn why decisions were being made, what made one photo stand out above the rest. Several years later, digital motion picture cameras arrived in a way that attracted more and more photographers to give directing a try, often capturing video along with their photo shoots. I enjoyed the challenge of learning a new way to work, bringing still photography into motion. I saw many varying approaches from DPs, using a wide array of camera movements and lights and lenses to create emotion and atmosphere, and to elevate the products or people they were filming. I was acutely aware of the working relationship between the DP and director and what was needed from a DP to best help the director outside of skill and aesthetic, including tact and efficiency. In my time working as a DP, I’ve enjoyed seeing all the work come together, to assemble and pull from past experiences, and to collaborate with such talented people.

Remaining committed to DP work and excited for each project, I continue to push into more challenges such as writing narrative and creating content for modern ways of distribution. I’m eager for what’s to come and look forward to using the incredible tools available today in my own content creation.
